Dock and Door Maintenance Tips
When your warehouse loading dock or doors don’t function properly, your productivity, energy consumption and revenue can be negatively affected. And improper maintenance is responsible for 70% to 85% of all failures. Here are three tips for keeping your docks and doors in good working order.
1) Safety Is the #1 Priority
Don’t wait for an accident to happen before addressing dock and door safety. Experts say that about 25% of all reported warehouse injuries occur on the loading dock. Mark floors with tape to identify areas where walking is off limits. Use locking devices to ensure that trailers don’t accidentally separate from the dock. Clean the dock area on a regular schedule. Royal Forklift can help you improve the safety and security of your dock operation to protect your people, products and machinery.
2) Take Care of Your Dock Doors and Levelers
The cost of the failure of dock doors or dock levelers, including the downtime, can add up quickly. Cables and springs should be inspected from time to time. If they begin breaking down or break completely, they need to be replaced. If the doors are noisy on opening or closing, e.g., they are loud, squeak, click, or have a jerky motion, they need attention. Springs, tracks, sliders, rollers, hinges, etc. should be cleaned and lubricated and loose door and track hardware should be tightened. This will protect the components from moisture, corrosion and premature wear.
3) Prevent Energy Loss and Water Damage
Prevent product damage and save money by maintaining the dock seals and shelters in good condition. Regularly check the weather stripping for water leakage, which threatens your merchandise and materials and creates a major safety hazard, and replace any damaged seals to avoid energy losses. Your loading dock and doors should be inspected and maintained at least annually, but more frequently if your dock gets heavy usage.
