Maintenance Tips
The best way to avoid needing a new part, of course, is to do whatever you can to keep the parts you have in the best possible working order. Here are a few maintenance tips that will help keep your forklift running reliably for the longest possible time.
- Inspect daily – It might seem like a hassle, but checking your forklift each and every day will go a long way toward ensuring it will reach its maximum lifespan. It’s also an OSHA requirement. Daily inspections will help you spot minor problems before they turn into major, costly issues. Check the tire pressure, brake performance, guards, seat belt levels and hoses prior to each shift.
- Pay attention to manufacturer recommendations – Every forklift manufacturer will have a recommended schedule of maintenance. Just like you change the oil and fluids in your car regularly, you should do the same with your forklift. Also, don’t forget to change the spark plugs, oil filter, and brakes per manufacturer guidelines.
- Check the tires regularly – The area where “the rubber meets the road,” so to speak, is critical to the proper functioning of your forklift. Take a close look at the tires to make sure they haven’t developed a leak. Look at the treads (if applicable) and make sure they’re wearing evenly. Uneven wear can often be a problem when a forklift follows the same path day after day.
- Clean weekly – A clean forklift will be a better working forklift. Cleaning your forklift each week will help you prevent problems such as a blocked radiator, or the accumulation of lint and other combustible materials. Wipe down the forklift, switch out dirty filters and clean out the radiator. You’ll be amazed at how much longer your forklift will last.
- Address problems as quickly as you can – Of course, there’s a chance that issues will still crop up, no matter how diligent you are about maintenance. If you notice a small problem, such as brakes becoming soft or a bent tine, take care of it as soon as you can. If you wait, then that small problem could become really large – and expensive.
