A Quick Guide to Choosing the Right Forklift
One of the ways we help our clients is by making sure they get exactly the right type of equipment. You might not know that forklifts actually fall into one of five categories. Take a look at each of these and see what kind of forklift will provide you with the most benefits.
- Class I forklifts (Electric motor rider forklifts) – These are electric models that have either three or four wheels. They’re designed to help with handling pallets, as well as unloading and loading tractor-trailers. The battery not only provides power, it also acts as a counterweight in order to make the forklift more stable. Class I models are perfect for warehouse use, because they’re quiet and they don’t produce any emissions.
- Class II forklifts (Electric forklifts for narrow aisles) – Class II models not only fit in tight spaces, they also offer high reach capabilities. Many of these forklifts can reach areas others can’t. Class II forklifts are typically stand-up models, but sit-down models are also available.
- Class III forklifts (Electric hand or hand/rider forklifts) – These are built for quick unloading and short runs. If you have a smaller warehouse, this might be the best option.
- Class IV forklifts (Internal combustion engine forklifts with solid or cushion tires) – If you have a need for a forklift that can operate inside your warehouse as well as outside on your loading dock, this could be the way to go. These run on liquid propane (LP) fuel. Just be careful not to use it on rough terrain, because the tires aren’t built for that type of use.
- Class V forklifts (Internal combustion engine forklifts with pneumatic tires) – Class V models run on either LP or diesel fuel, and are designed for outdoor use. However, if you have a large warehouse, a Class V forklift will work very well.
