Main Components & Parts of a Forklift
Forklifts are complex pieces of equipment that have many components, and the components themselves are made up of parts, such as bearings, chains, and gears. Here are some of the main forklift components:
Frame: The frame of a forklift is like the chassis of a car; it is the metal frame to which the major forklift components are attached, such as the engine, mast, counterweight, axles and wheels. In some forklifts, fuel tanks are built into the frame.
Operator Cab: This is the central part of the forklift where the driver sits to operate the equipment. It contains the steering wheel, brake/gas pedals, levers to control the forks and the mast, safety devices, and a dashboard with gauges. In some forklifts, the cab will contain a seat for the driver.
Mast: The forklift mast is made up of interlocking rails that lift and lower the forks and carriage. The amount of forward and backward tilt of the mast, forks and carriage are controlled by the tilt cylinder. The amount of vertical lift is controlled by a hydraulic lift cylinder.
Carriage: The carriage is part of the mast and is used to lift and stabilize the load. It generally includes the forks and load backrest.
Forks: The forks are the long pieces of metal at the bottom of the carriage that support the load from the bottom. They come in a variety of widths, lengths, and sizes to suit different purposes and adjust from right to left on the carriage.
Load Backrest: The load backrest allows for safe loading and unloading. It is designed to support the load and keep it from sliding into the driver.
Tires: The steer tires of a forklift are located in the back and turn on a radius to maneuver the lift in reverse and around corners. The drive tires are in front and stay in a fixed position. Generally, forklift tires are either cushion tires (for use indoors on smooth, flat surfaces) or pneumatic tires (better suited for outdoor environments).
