How to Choose the Right Forklift
Choosing the wrong forklift can set you back in terms of productivity. Here are several factors to consider when choosing the right forklift:
How often will you be loading the forklift?
If your shipping department is loading trailers constantly, a stand-up end control forklift may be your best choice. These lift trucks have capacities from 3,000 to 4,000 pounds, can easily fit into standard trailer doors, and have masts that allow for stacking if needed. If you are loading only a few semi-trailers or box trucks a week, consider using an electric walkie or walkie end-rider.
What type of space do you have to work with?
Some warehouses have plenty of room for operators to maneuver around in. Others are filled to capacity and have limited space for larger equipment. This may call for a three-wheel electric forklift to perform better in tighter turning radius areas. If you have lots of space, choose what the three or four-wheel forklift your operator prefers. If lifting more than 4,000 pounds, you will need a four-wheel model.
What are the operator’s duties?
The duties of each operator are important to consider when choosing a forklift. If the drivers are constantly getting on and off the lift trucks, they can become fatigued. Consider a stand-up option for easy access. If they are on their machines for 7 or 8 hours a day, you may prefer to choose a sit-down counterbalance forklift that will add comfort and improve their efficiency during the workday.
New or used?
If your forklifts will be used for more than four hours per day – a leased or new forklift will be the best option. In this case, the type of forklift and your budget will help you decide. If it’s not used every day, and then only for an hour or two, consider a high-quality used forklift.
