What Kind of Forklift Do You Need?
It can be touch for even the most seasoned facilities operators to know specifically what kind of forklift they need. Whether you’re buying one for the first time, or you’ve done this for years, this quick look at the seven types of forklifts will help you make the right choice.
- Class I Forklifts – These forklifts operate very quietly, since they operate on batteries rather than fuel. If you have a warehouse and need to watch the quality of your indoor air, a Class I forklift will be a great option. They’re great for jobs such as pallet handling or tractor-trailer loading and unloading.
- Class II Forklifts – A Class II forklift is designed to work in narrow, tight spaces, such as a warehouse. It can pick up and store inventory at heights most other forklifts can’t reach.
- Class III Forklifts – These include hand-rider units, such as rider pallet jacks, stand-up forklifts, and walk-behind pallet jacks. If you need to quickly unload inventory from a tractor-trailer and move it to a staging area, a Class III forklift will be a good choice.
- Class IV Forklifts – Forklifts in this category typically have an internal combustion engine and sits on cushion tires. It’s best for use on smooth floors free of moisture, for tasks such as transferring pallets from the storage area to the loading dock and vice versa. Since these forklifts typically ride lower to the ground, they’re great for environments that have low clearance.
- Class V Forklifts – These also have an internal combustion engine, but they use pneumatic, rather than cushioned tires. You can use them inside, but they’re really meant for outside use. Class V forklifts run on either LP, diesel, gasoline or compressed natural gas.
- Class VI Forklifts – A Class VI forklift is a combustion/electric hybrid. They can be used both indoors and outside, and do an excellent job of towing a load.
- Class VII Forklifts – These are perfect for areas with rough terrain, thanks to their tractor-style tires. You’ll typically find them in construction sites and lumberyards.
