Which Type of Forklift Do You Need?
Choosing the right forklift or aerial lift for your business can affect everything from productivity and stock management to operational costs. There are many options on the market today, and here are some questions to answer before you decide:
Will you use it indoors, outdoors or both?
If your lift truck will work exclusively indoors, you may want to go with one that is electric-powered. They are quieter, emission-free and more compact than liquid propane gas (LPG) machines. LPG trucks are very useful in outdoor applications, but can also operate indoors. Diesel trucks are intended only for outdoor use.
Your answer to this question will also affect whether you choose a forklift with cushion or pneumatic tires. Cushion tires are ideal for indoor use; pneumatic for outdoor. They cannot be changed later.
The uniquely flexible UniCarriers Nomad® is a great choice when you need an indoor/outdoor lift truck. Built on a smaller frame, the compact chassis provides tight handling in confined warehouse spaces and rides on solid pneumatic tires that enable it to traverse on paved outdoor surfaces.
How often do you plan to use the truck?
Some customers purchase forklifts to use occasionally, while others put them to use them nonstop. For occasional use, consider a walk-behind (“walkie”) forklift such as the UniCarriers WLX Walkie Pallet Truck. This Class III forklift is powered by an electric motor, has a load capacity of 4,500 pounds, and can handle very heavy pallet loads.
What load length/weight will it need to handle?
Don’t make the mistake of choosing lift equipment that can’t meet your load capacity and height requirements. The heavier the materials you need to lift, the larger the truck must be to lift them. Load lengths are also important. Longer loads may require longer forks but will also affect the truck’s lift capacity.
