Choose a Lift Truck Wisely
Choosing the right forklift or aerial lift is important for your business. It can affect everything from productivity and stock management to operational costs. Here are several factors you will have to consider:
Space
The dimensions of your warehouse should influence your selection. Be sure that the forklift you are considering can actually maneuver easily within your warehouse. You won’t want a lift truck that’s too large to maneuver through your aisles.
Load Size / Capacity
Most common forklifts can lift anywhere from one to five tons, but how will this help you if most loads in your warehouse are greater than 10 tons? Choosing the wrong forklift for jobs you will be doing every day is dangerous and a recipe for disaster. Consider:
- The type of stock the lift will handle
- Your average and heaviest load weights
- The typical height and width of your loads
- Warehouse height and aisle width requirements
- The highest point the lift must reach
- Height restrictions, such as low hanging lights, ceiling beams and fixed-height structures like garage or container doors
Fuel Type
You will have three fuel options to consider: LP, electric or diesel. Electric forklifts typically cost more initially, but they generally have a longer lifespan, cost less to operate over time, and produce no emissions – all factors that make them well-suited to working indoors and in cold climates. If the truck will be used outside the warehouse, LP or diesel forklifts are the recommended choice. They can also lift larger loads and move faster. If your operations call for both indoor and outdoor use, however, LP forklifts are generally preferable because their fumes are less toxic.
Tire Type
Rough terrain and outdoor work environments call for pneumatic tire forklifts. There are two types of pneumatic tires: solid and air. We recommend cushion tire forklifts for indoor use, such as in your warehouse, or on smooth surfaces.
