Common Types of Forklifts & Their Uses
When you need to move heavy loads in a warehouse, on a construction site or in a storage facility, a forklift can usually do the job. With a wide selection of styles and types of forklifts to choose from, it’s not always easy to know which forklift is best-suited to your needs and environment.
Counterbalance forklifts: These forklifts have a weight at the rear of the truck that offsets the load to be lifted at the front. They are the most common type of lift truck, and the one most people picture when thinking of forklifts. They can handle virtually all material handling functions and feature dual forks that protrude from the front of the machine to help move loads from one place to another. Counterbalance forklifts are typically used in indoor warehouses and stores, but can be used outdoors on stable, even surfaces.
3-wheel counterbalance forklifts: These forklifts work in a similar way to regular counterbalance forklifts, but have a single drive wheel in the center of the rear of the machine to ensure maximum maneuverability. Because they can turn tight circles, they are best for narrow aisles and tight spaces. They are also well-suited to applications that require inside and outside use and racking loading.
Reach truck forklifts: These machines have extended lift height and are best for use in warehouses with high-rise storage pallet racking. The name is derived from the fork carriage’s ability to “reach” beyond the stabilizing legs and into racking. Stand-up trucks are most common, and they can operate in very tight working environments. Although excellent for indoor use, the low under-carriage clearance on reach forklifts makes them less suitable for outside work.
Sideloaders: These lift trucks operate by picking up their load from the side. They are ideal for handling wide loads that would otherwise be unstable on a conventional counterbalance forklift, and are designed to handle long materials, such as timber, piping and sheets. Sideloaders with enclosed cabs are typically used outside, while stand-up versions are more suitable for indoor work.
