Forklift Classifications
Whether you are looking for your first lift truck, replacing older equipment, or expanding your fleet, these seven classes of forklift should help you find the equipment you need for your warehouse operations, whether you decide to lease, rent, or buy your next forklift:
Class I = Electric motor rider trucks. These vehicles are very versatile and are found from the loading dock to storage facilities. They are battery-powered, produce no emissions, and are much quieter than other lifts. When equipped with cushion tires, they are ideal for indoor use on smooth floors. Models with pneumatic tires can be used in dry, outdoor applications.
Class II = Electric motor narrow aisle trucks. Forklifts in this class offer height that many other forklifts cannot achieve and are perfect for handling pallets and picking and putting away inventory. They are ideal for companies with narrow aisle storage systems, and can be used to gain more storage space within the same warehouse footprint.
Class III = Electric motor hand or hand/rider trucks. These lifts are commonly used to transport materials that do not require placement on high shelves or racks. The class includes hand-controlled forklifts, such as walk-behind pallet jacks, rider pallet jacks, “tuggers,” and stand-up counterbalanced forklifts. There are also motorized pallet jacks in this category that have seats.
Class IV = Internal combustion engine trucks with cushion tires. These are sit-down forklifts designed for use inside on smooth dry floors for moving pallets to and from the loading dock and the storage area. Cushion-tired forklifts typically ride lower to the ground than other trucks, making them useful in low-clearance situations.
Class V = Internal combustion engine trucks with pneumatic tires. These are sit-down forklifts meant to be used outside, but they may also be used inside large warehouses. Forklifts in this class are very versatile for different load sizes and can handle single pallets to loaded 40-foot containers. They are available with LPG, gasoline, diesel, and compressed natural gas fuel systems.
Class VI = Electric and internal combustion engine tractors. These vehicles are versatile and can be used in many different applications, both indoors and outdoors, but are most often used for pulling rather than lifting (e.g., airport towing luggage carts). Royal Forklift does not supply lift trucks in this category.
Class VII = Rough terrain forklift trucks. These heavy-duty forklifts are fitted with large tractor-style pneumatic tires for outdoor use on rough surfaces. They are most commonly used at lumberyards, auto recyclers, or construction sites to lift building materials to high elevations. We offer Sellick forklifts in this category.
